Centella asiatica, commonly known as Gotu Kola, Indian pennywort, Asiatic pennywort or Mandookparni, is a herbaceous, frost-tender perennial plant in the flowering plant family Apiaceae.It is native to the wetlands in Asia.It is used as a culinary vegetable and as a medicinal herb.
Centella grows in temperate and tropical swampy areas in many regions of the world .The stems are slender, creeping stolons, green to reddish-green in color, connecting plants to each other. It has long-stalked, green, rounded apices which have smooth texture with palmately netted veins. The leaves are borne on pericladial petioles, around 2 cm (0.79 in). The rootstock consists of rhizomes, growing vertically down. They are creamish in color and covered with root hairs.
Pennywort/Centella is an important medicinal herb, that is widely used in the orient and is becoming popular in the West. Triterpenoid, saponins, the primary constituents of Centella asiatica are manly believed to be responsible for its wide therapeutic actions and one of the most spiritual of all herbs in Ayurvedic medicine. There have been no reports documenting negative interactions between CA and medications to date. Since high doses of CA can cause sedation, it was warned that individuals should refrain from taking this herb with medications that promote sleep or reduce anxiety. Theoretically, CA was postulated to interfere with blood glucose levels and thus also possibly interfere with the existing hypoglycemic therapy and cholesterol lowering agents.
