Centella asiatica, commonly known as Gotu Kola, Indian pennywort, Asiatic pennywort or Mandookparni, is a herbaceous, frost-tender perennial plant in the flowering plant family Apiaceae.It is native to the wetlands in Asia.It is used as a culinary vegetable and as a medicinal herb.

Centella grows in temperate and tropical swampy areas in many regions of the world .The stems are slender, creeping stolons, green to reddish-green in color, connecting plants to each other. It has long-stalked, green, rounded apices which have smooth texture with palmately netted veins. The leaves are borne on pericladial petioles, around 2 cm (0.79 in). The rootstock consists of rhizomes, growing vertically down. They are creamish in color and covered with root hairs.

Pennywort/Centella is an important medicinal herb, that is widely used in the orient and is becoming popular in the West. Triterpenoid, saponins, the primary constituents of Centella asiatica are manly believed to be responsible for its wide therapeutic actions and one of the most spiritual of all herbs in Ayurvedic medicine. It is an important rejuvenate herb helps to balancing nervous system, neurotransmission functions and reduce risk of diabetes microangiopathy. Apart from wound healing, the herb is recommended for the treatment of various skin conditions such as leprosy, lupus, varicose ulcers, eczema, psoriasis, diarrhea, fever, amenorrhea, diseases of the female genitourinary tract and for relieving anxiety and improving cognition.

There have been no reports documenting negative interactions between CA and medications to date. Since high doses of CA can cause sedation, it was warned that individuals should refrain from taking this herb with medications that promote sleep or reduce anxiety. Theoretically, CA was postulated to interfere with blood glucose levels and thus also possibly interfere with the existing hypoglycemic therapy and cholesterol lowering agents.

This herb can be prepared as a delicious porridge that is very famous breakfast herbal porridge in srilanka. Gotukola cooked with red rice and coconut milk and it improves flavor and palatability. Commonly this porridge taste with small piece of kithul jaggery which is rich in iron. Therefore, gotukola porridge is a nutrition dense balance meal for your breakfast.
