Origin of Buddhist Nuns in Sri Lanka

Binara Pasalosvaka Poya occupies a significant place in the history of Buddha Sasana. It is on this Poya day, Bhikkhuni Sasana was founded. When the Buddha was residing at Nigrodharamaya in the city of Kapilavasthu, Mahaprajapathi Gothami requested permission for women to enter the Order.DSCN5255
Buddhist scriptures tell us that after an initial reluctance, he decided to grant permission, but after laying down eight tenets of the code to be followed by the Bhikkhunis. The Queen and the 500 Sakyan princesses who accompanied her agreed to follow. Ordination was conducted thereafter. The Bhikkhuni Order in India however, lasted not more than 5 centuries as it went into extinction with the decline of Buddhism from the late Gupta period.
Today, therefore, it may be appropriate for us to take a brief journey through the history of the Bhikkhuni order in Sri Lanka.
Higher ordination was not given to dasasilmathas (ten preceptors) in Sri Lanka because the Sangha led by the three Mahanayaka Theras decreed that the Order of Nuns (Bhikkhuni Sasana) died down centuries ago in the country and cannot be revived except by a Bhikkhuni of the Theravada unbroken lineage. This was not possible since the lineage, even in remotest Chinese Buddhist territory, had gone extinct.
Every Buddhist knows that it was during the 3rd century BC, the Bhikkhuni order was established in Sri Lanka under the guidance of Sanghamitta Theri.
The Princess Anula, wife of the younger brother of King Devanam Piyatissa, along with 500 other women, joined the higher ordination of Buddhism as Buddhist nuns.DSCN5254
Within a short period of time, the Buddhism earned many followers in Sri Lanka. During that time, the island had a large Buddhist religious community of bhikkhus and bhikkhunis who advocated the Buddhist teachings across the country.
The Bhikkhuni Sasana lasted till the end of the Anuradhapura Era. The final mention of a Nunnery in the Chronicles was during the reign of Mihindu the fourth (956-972) who built Mahawallaka Nunnery for Theravada bhikkhunis.
Visits to China and Tibet
History tells us that in 429 CE, Bhikkhuni Devasara took a cutting from the Sri Lankan bodhi tree at Anuradhapura, and travelled to China with a group of bhikkhunis to establish a bhikkhuni sangha there.DSCN5229
At the same time the mission left to China, Bhikkhuni Chandramali led the second group to Tibet, described as a greatly hazardous journey. In Tibet, they translated six Tibetan texts from Sanskrit to Tibetan including the Tibetan Tripitaka which was called the Kanjur.
Bhikkhus in China politely asked the visiting group whether some of them would be willing to return home and bring more bhikkhunis so they would have enough quorum for an ordination. While some of the original bhikkhunis stayed behind, others Returned to Sri Lanka. They gathered the requisite number of bhikkhunis to make a quorum for the ordination and four years later, arrived back in China. It is said that over 300 Chinese nuns were ordained at the Nan Lin Southern Forest Monastery in Nanjing.DSCN5215
Unlike Sri Lanka, China’s bhikkhuni lineage, has continued to the present day in an unbroken upasampada (ordination) lineage. And, in between, the bhikkhuni order was transmitted to Taiwan, Korea, and Vietnam from China. There are now thousands of Taiwanese, Korean, Vietnamese, and Chinese bhikkhunis.DSCN5253
Around the 11th century, however, the Order of Buddhist nuns slowly began to lose its place among Buddhist culture in Sri Lanka. There is a number of reasons for this catastrophe.
In 1017 Cholian tribes, who were extremist Hindus, came down from India and conquered the Anuradhapura Kingdom and as a result, the Bhikkhu and Bhikkhuni orders disappeared and became defunct. After 50 years of the Cholian rule though, Vijayabahu the First (1055-1110) expelled the invaders. During this half century, the local Buddhist practices became more and more under Tamil and Hindu influence.
Since the fall of the Anuradhapura kingdom, fewer women were inclined to join the Buddhist clergy. There were only a few Buddhist nuns left to perform the higher ordination for the novices. Only a senior bhikkhuni can perform the ordination of bhikkhunis. It cannot be performed by a Buddhist monk.
Vijayabahu the First wanted to revive the Bhikkhu and BhikkhuniOrders. He got down Bhikkhus from Burma for the ordination of Sri Lankan bhikkhus. However, there is no indication that he got the services of senior Bhikkhunis from Burma.
According to Professor Ranaweera Gunawardene, there was a Burmese inscription which speaks of the existence of Theravada Bhikkhunis in Burma in 1196CE. Even in 1279CE according to inscriptions, nunneries had existed in Burma.
So, the bhikkhuni order died out in the Theravada tradition. However, women continued to practice. Women’s monasticism took different forms, for example, eight and ten-precept nuns.
Dr Hema Goonetilake, a renowned Buddhist scholar and researcher, gives us interesting insights into the Bhikkhuni Order in Sri Lanka. He says that Dipavamsa of the fourth century BC a work authored by Bhikkhunis, and it was the first Chronicle to have been documented in Sri Lanka. It gives in detail the establishment of the Bhikkhuni Order, its history, development, expansion and the spiritual and intellectual successes of the bhikkhunis.
This is in contrast to the documentation in the Mahavamsa written in the sixth century CE based on the Dipavamsa where Bhikkhu scribes had ignored the services of Bhikkhunis except for the initial events and brief references. Dr Goonetileke’s contention is that Mahavamsa which gives the “male history” of the Theravada fraternity appears to be a deliberate effort to delegitimize the services of the bhikkhunis.
Dr Goonetilleke brings up the argument which is made today by many among the Sangha in Theravada countries that there is no possibility of resuscitating the Bhikkhuni Order as the traditional requirement of an appropriate lineage does not exist. However, she points out that it is not possible to strictly adhere to the rules and regulations as set out earlier for the reestablishment of the Theravada Bhikkhuni Order.
In the latter part of last century, there were attempts to revive Bhikkhuni Order in Sri Lanka.
Higher ordination was not given to dasasilmathas (ten preceptors) in Sri Lanka because the Sangha led by the three Mahanayaka Theras decreed that theDSCN5259 Order of Nuns (Bhikkhuni Sasana) died down centuries ago in the country and cannot be revived except by a Bhikkhuni of the Theravada unbroken lineage. This was not possible since the lineage, even in remotest Chinese Buddhist territory, had gone extinct.

Yet, in 1996, a group of dasasilmathas led by Sister Kusuma went to Buddha Gaya and received higher ordination from a South Korean senior Bhikkhuni and later received ordination again from Sri Lankan Theravada monks led by Sumangala Thera in Rangiri Dambulla Vihara. Thus, some believe, the lineage or Order of Bhikkhunis was restored. The event was organised by Venerable Mapalagama Vipulasara Thera.
Six months later, Sumangala Thera got these 20 bhikkhunis to confer ordination on 22 samaneris of Sri Lanka along with many from other countries. Most of the bhikkhunis have gone to other countries to build the bhikkhuni sangha. Sri Lanka

In 2020, Will the Democrats Slay Trump – or Themselves?

With the new year right around the corner, it’s worth considering what the world will look like a year from now. Our pace of change is, after all, light speed: 2020 could bring all sorts of crazy. This is true even if Donald Trump survives impeachment (which is likely) and even if he survives re-election (which is less likely, but still well within the realm of possibility).

We see through a glass darkly. Who would have predicted the Ukraine call that dominated the last half of 2019? Every day, it seems, brings us a new development, insane tweets, and new colorful characters being introduced to this drama. Why should next year be different?

A healthy, if chilling, reminder: Despite our gloominess about the future, this president has not yet been fully tested. Many of the events that could define 2020—the things that would likely determine electoral outcomes—are beyond our control. Right now, Trump is running on a very good economy. Indeed, that alone would probably be enough to guarantee the re-election of a normal incumbent president. But what happens if this economy begins to show signs of slowing? We should not root for this, but the trajectory of an economy matters, and a potential downturn could remove the best card that Trump is holding.

Christmas typhoon leaves 16 dead in Philippines

MANILA, Philippines — A strong typhoon that barreled through the central Philippines left at least 20 people dead and forced thousands to flee their homes, devastating Christmas celebrations in the predominantly Catholic country.

Typhoon Phanfone stranded many people in sea and airports at the peak of holiday travel, set off landslides, flooded low-lying villages, destroyed houses, downed trees and electrical poles and knocked out power in entire provinces. One disaster response officer described the battered coastal town of Batad in Iloilo province as a “ghost town” on Christmas Day.

“You can’t see anybody because there was a total blackout, you can’t hear anything. The town looked like a ghost town,” Cindy Ferrer of the regional Office of the Civil Defense said by phone.

The storm weakened slightly on Thursday as it blew into the South China Sea with sustained winds of 120 kilometers (74 miles) per hour and gusts of 150 kph (93 mph) after lashing island after island with fierce winds and pounding rain on Christmas Day, the weather agency said.

Most of the 20 deaths reported by national police and local officials were due to drowning, falling trees and accidental electrocution.

A father, his three children and another relative were among those missing in hard-hit Iloilo province after a swollen river inundated their shanty, officials said.

The typhoon slammed into Eastern Samar province on Christmas Eve and then plowed across the archipelago’s central region on Christmas, slamming into seven coastal towns and island provinces without losing power, government forecasters said.

Provincial officials, army troops, police and volunteers spent Christmas away from home to tend to thousands of displaced residents in town gymnasiums and schools turned into emergency shelters. Many more people spent Christmas Eve, traditionally a time for family reunions, in bus terminals.

More than 25,000 people were stranded in sea ports across the central region and outlying provinces after the coast guard prohibited ferries and cargo ships from venturing into dangerously choppy waters. Dozens of international and domestic flights to and from the region were canceled, including to popular beach and surfing resorts.

About 20 typhoons and storms batter the Philippines each year. The Southeast Asian nation is also located in the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” where earthquakes and volcanic eruptions often occur, making the country of more than 100 million people one of the world’s most disaster prone.

Phanfone, a Laotian word for the animal, traveled along a path similar to that of Typhoon Haiyan, one of the most ferocious storms on record, which left more than 7,300 people dead and missing, flattened entire villages, swept ships inland and displaced more than 5 million people in the central Philippines in 2013.

Pope Francis led the world’s 1.3 billion Roman Catholics into Christmas yesterday

Pope Francis led the world’s 1.3 billion Roman Catholics into Christmas yesterday, urging them not to let the Church’s failings lead them away from accepting God’s love.

Francis celebrated a solemn Christmas Eve Mass in St. Peter’s Basilica for thousands of people as hundreds of others watched on large screens outside.

As is customary on Christmas Eve, the 83-year-old pope weaved his sermon around the spiritual and personal significance of the night that Jesus was born in Bethlehem.

“Christmas reminds us that God continues to love us all, even the worst of us,” Francis, presiding at the seventh Christmas season of his pontificate, said in his sermon.

Without mentioning them specifically, Francis also referred to recent Church troubles, including its attempts to come to grips with continuous sexual abuse scandals around the world and financial irregularities closer to home at the Vatican.

No more whatsapp for some smartphones in 2020

WhatsApp will stop working on millions of phones in the next couple of months as the company withdraws support for some older mobile platforms.

From February 1, 2020, any iPhone running iOS 8 or older will no longer be supported, along with any Android device running version 2.3.7 or older.

Users of these operating systems are already unable to create new WhatsApp accounts or re-verify existing accounts.

Furthermore, WhatsApp is withdrawing support for all Windows phones from December 31, 2019 — the same month that Microsoft ends support of its Windows 10 Mobile OS.

WhatsApp said ‘because we no longer actively develop for these operating systems, some features might stop functioning at any time’.

The Facebook-owned messenger service will continue to provide support for devices running Android 4.0.3 onwards and iPhones running iOS 9 and onwards.

‘On iOS 8, you can no longer create new accounts or reverify existing accounts,’ the company said.

‘If WhatsApp is currently active on your iOS 8 device, you’ll be able to use it until February 1, 2020.’

Select phones running Linux-operated KaiOS 2.5.1 and older, including JioPhone and JioPhone 2, are also still supported.

WhatsApp has been gradually phasing out support for various smartphone platforms that ‘don’t offer the kind of capabilities we need to expand our app’s features in the future’.

In a previous post, WhatsApp had said: ‘This was a tough decision for us to make, but the right one in order to give people better ways to keep in touch with friends, family, and loved ones using WhatsApp.’

WhatsApp is the latest casualty of Microsoft’s almost defunct Windows 10 Mobile operating system.

Earlier this year, Microsoft itself even suggested that Windows 10 Mobile users should switch to Android or iOS devices because of its lack of app support. (Daily Mail)

Spices You May Not Want to Use With Picky Eaters

What Is Nutmeg?

Nutmeg is one of two spices that grow on an evergreen tree with the scientific classification Myristica fragrans, also known as common nutmeg. It is native to islands near Indonesia, but is now a globally used spice. These trees bear nutmeg, which is the seed of the tree, as well as mace, a less common spice derived from the dried reddish shell of the seed. This is the only tree which is the source of two distinct spices in the world. It is commonly grown in the Caribbean, other tropical areas of the world, and also in Southern India in the state of Kerala.

Nutmeg is a delicate, slightly sweet spice that is widely used in cuisines around the world, including both Asian and western recipes. The tree is also highly valued because of the essential oils that are derived from the tree and leaves, and nutmeg butter is also a popular derivative food that packs a healthy punch. The essential oils from nutmeg extract are highly beneficial to health, and are frequently used in alternative and herbal medicine.

Nutmeg Nutrition Facts

While nutmeg is only a spice that is used sparingly in dishes, it can still impact your health in a variety of ways, mainly due to its nutritive content of vitamins, minerals, and organic compounds related to the essential oils. These beneficial components include dietary fiber, manganese, thiamin, vitamin B6, folate, magnesium, copper, and macelignan. The many health benefits of nutmeg are explained in greater detail below.

Health Benefits Of Nutmeg

Health benefits of nutmeg includes:

Pain Relief

One of the components of nutmeg is a compound similar to menthol, which has natural pain-relieving characteristics. Therefore, by adding nutmeg as a spice in your cooking, you can reduce associated pain from wounds, injuries, strains, and chronic inflammation from conditions like arthritis.

Promotes Digestive Health

When you grind nutmeg into a powder, it retains its fiber content, which can stimulate the digestive process by promoting peristaltic motion in the smooth muscles of the intestine. Also, it induces the secretion of various gastric and intestinal juices that ease the digestive process. Since fiber can bulk up the bowel movements, it reduces the frequency and discomfort of constipation and other intestinal issues.

Brain Health

One of the lesser known benefits of adding nutmeg in any variety to your diet are the various components of its essential oil, called myristicin and macelignan. These compounds have been proven to reduce the degradation of neural pathways and cognitive function that commonly afflicts people with dementia or Alzheimer’s disease. Studies have shown myristicin and macelignan slow those effects, and keep your brain functioning at a normal, healthy level.

Detoxifies the Body

Nutmeg acts as a tonic in many different ways, and therefore boosts the overall health of your body. More specifically, in terms of liver and kidney, where many of the toxins are stored and accumulated from the body, nutmeg can help eliminate them. It literally cleans those organs out of all the toxins that may be stored there from alcohol, drugs, pollution, food, or natural organic toxins. Furthermore, active ingredients in nutmeg help to dissolve kidney stones, and increase overall function and efficiency of the kidney and liver.

Oral Health

In traditional medical applications, nutmeg was considered the king of spices when it came to oral health. The active antibacterial components of nutmeg means that it helps to fight conditions like halitosis, also known as bad breath. It kills the bacteria that causes this embarrassing condition, and generally boosts the immunity of your gums and teeth. This is why nutmeg and its extracts are commonly found in toothpastes and mouthwashes, particularly in organic or herbal varieties.

Treats Insomnia

For generations, nutmeg has been recommended as a home remedy for sleeplessness and insomnia. A pinch of nutmeg in warm milk always seemed to do the trick. Nutmeg has a high content of magnesium, an essential mineral in the body that reduces nerve tension, and even stimulates the release of serotonin which creates a feeling of relaxation or sedation. This serotonin is changed to melatonin in the brain, which is a sleep inducer, relieving people of their problems with insomnia and restlessness at night. Nutmeg also has trace elements of narcotics, which have no dramatic effect unless taken in massive quantities. However, the small amount can help you release various neurotransmitters which in turn helps induce relaxation and sleep.

Treats Leukemia

Another of the lesser known qualities of nutmeg is its potential use against cancerous cells. Studies have shown that a certain methanolic compound in nutmeg and its essential oil can actually induce cell death (apoptosis) in leukemia cells, thereby stopping the spread and metastasis of this terrible variety of cancer that commonly afflicts children.

Poetry of Sex

I am deeply thoughtful of poetry, particularly when related to sex. One of the medieval poems that have impressed me is the “Song of Songs”. This song refers to the love between God and the soul. God is deeply in love with us, and wills our love in return. This love between the soul and God, which is the most intimate love possible, is expressed in the analogy of bride and bridegroom, where the intimacy of love is especially expressed. Nothing can be more intimate than this love where a bride and her love enter into a carnal embrace. In history, no book has received such intensely devoted attention in commentary and preaching as this song.

The composer of this song was Bernard of Clairvaux. He was a French abbot and the primary reformer of the Cistercian order. The Song does not have the same importance earlier, but never the less it is a part of modern people’s imagination. Bernard preached eighty-six homilies on the Song and died just as he was getting started on chapter 3

The song and Lusty thoughts

The song is often read in modern days as a lusty celebration of sex People like me read it to brush aside the prudish poetry and try and peep into the sex acts of Solomon and his Shulammite ( women of Jerusalem). Thus the contemporary obsession is projected by the ancient text. It assumes that everybody knows about sex and it’s depth. Perhaps in modern times we have outgrown old romantic notions of sex and know it more as a clash of bodies and exchange of fluids. There is thus no magic and no mystery in it. The song is disguised pornography that gives sex a sacred image. It represents the confusion of that age.

The Erotic Poem

The song teaches a lot. Robert Alter has made a telling observation. As per him the song is the epitome of erotic literature. The theme states that the body in the act of love seems to displace the rest of the world.

The song affirms joyful love. In the poem, Solomon is a lover who abandons the world for the love of his bride. The beauty of the song is that he rediscovers the world and love in her. This glorious insight is enough to justify the song as great literature.

The song itself sinks the reader into something deeper. The song gives the poem a cosmic look. The strength of love is comparable to forces of decay and destruction I.e death and Sheol.

Further discussion

Despite all allusions to god, the poem is an erotic piece. As per the poem, love, like wine is the intoxicating desire of carnal knowledge. This is disguised as sexual attraction. The theme covers all this and brings out that God invites his beloved into the “house of wine”. Wine is a fitting trope for the one love because it is a fitting trope for the other. Forests, orchards, and gardens are figures of the temple, The lover’s enthrallment to his beloved is the Lord’s enthralled fascination for his people, black but beautiful.

The song brings out something which has been known since time immemorial that sex is an allegory and it includes metaphysics and theology and cosmology. For Christians, sexual difference and union is a type of Christ and the church: How could an erotic poem (and in the Bible!) be anything but allegory?

Poetry like this brings out the truth of human sexuality. Only as allegory does the Song have anything to teach us about sex. Only as allegory can the Song play its central role in healing our sexual imaginations.

Last word

How similar this is to Tantra of Hinduism where sex is unadulterated bliss and a path to God and salvation. This poem also explores the union of man and woman in a similar vein. I am sure friends will now read this poem along with the Tantra as espoused in the Puranas and conclude that sex has a definite place in the world and cannot be brushed under anything.

Brain Tumor – Types, Symptoms, and Causes

Our brains are the seat of all we are. Every thought and action we perform is an output of our brain. So understandably the thought of an affliction striking the brain can be terrifying.

Brain cancer is a rare but devastating form of cancer accounting for 2% of all cancer cases worldwide. Brain cancer refers to the abnormal growth and division of cells within the brain. Brain tumours can be either benign or cancerous and cancerous brain tumours are further split into primary brain tumours that start in the brain and secondary tumours that start elsewhere in the body and spread (metastasize) to the brain.

Whether benign or a malignant tumour can increase the volume of the brain which creates pressure in the tight skull space. The bony skull is extremely hard and rigid. Any encroachment in this tight space increases intracranial pressure which can lead to brain damage, coma, and even death.

Types Of Brain Tumours

The first major classification of types of brain tumours is benign and malignant tumours. Benign brain tumours are the least aggressive and slowest growing tumours. They do not have cancerous cells and have a good prognosis after treatment.

Malignant or cancerous brain tumours arise from brain cells, supportive cells, and other tissue found in and around the brain. These are high-grade tumours. Grading for tumours involves rating a growth on a scale of 1 to 4 with low-grade scores being 1 and 2, and 3 and 4 are high grade. Benign tumours are low grade which is slow growing, contained, less likely to spread, and unlikely to return after removal. On the other hand, malignant or cancerous tumours are high grade which means they are fast growing, spread to surrounding tissues, and are more likely to return after removal.

Cancerous tumours are further divided into primary and secondary tumours.

Primary cancerous tumours originate within the brain itself while secondary tumours are a result of metastasis from tumours in other organ systems, commonly from the lungs.

Primary tumours are rarer and the most common types of primary brain tumours are gliomas and meningiomas. Gliomas affect the glial cells which are supportive cells in the brain that provide nourishment and structural support to neurons. Gliomas account for 50% of all primary brain tumours.

Symptoms Of Brain Tumours

The brain is a large and complicated organ. Symptoms of brain tumours depend on the size, type, and location of a tumour. Some common signs and symptoms are:

  • Headaches, typically worse in the morning and progressively worsening over time.
  • Persistent nausea
  • Persistent vomiting
  • Dizziness
  • Progressive body weakness
  • Fatigue
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Behavioural or mood changes
  • Vision problems
  • Confusion and memory impairment
  • Specific symptoms depend on the size of a tumour and its location. Based on this, some of the signs and symptoms that may be noticed are:
  • Personality changes, less inhibition, poor judgement, etc. in frontal lobe tumours
  • Language difficulties, poor memory, and hearing problems in temporal lobe tumours
  • Sensory disturbances, progressive muscle weakness, etc. In parietal lobe tumours
  • Visual disturbances or loss of vision in occipital lobe tumours.
  • Loss of balance and coordination in cerebellar tumours.
  • Changes in respiration, blood pressure, and heartbeat in brain stem tumours

This is a short summary of tumours in the major regions of the brain. As one goes more in depth a variety of symptoms can be found ranging from loss of language comprehension to hallucinations.Cause Of Brain Tumours

The underlying cause of brain cancer is not well known.

The two major factors implicated in the development of brain tumours is genetics and exposure to radiation. Gene mutations, sequence deletions, and loss of tumour suppressor genes are thought to contribute to the cause of brain tumours. A family history of tumours also increases the risk of developing the conditions. Certain genetic disorders such as neurofibromatosis, tuberous sclerosis, and Turner’s syndrome are associated with a higher risk of developing brain tumours.

Exposure to ionising radiation has been linked to brain cancer especially in children. Exposure to Vinyl chloride, an industrial chemical used to manufacture PVC, has also been linked to brain cancer.

Other risk factors for brain cancer are:

Age- risk increases with age, except for some forms of brain cancer that are more common in children

Previous cancer diagnosis- a person who has had cancer elsewhere in the body is more at risk of developing brain cancer, especially childhood cancer and blood cancers such as leukaemia and non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.

HIV/AIDS- people with HIV/AIDS are twice as likely to develop brain cancer than the general population.

Treatment Of Brain Tumours

The plan of treatment for brain cancer depends on the size, grade, and location of a tumour as well as overall patient health. Malignant brain tumours are usually surgically removed. However, surgical resection of an entire tumour may not always be feasible due to location or other factors like ease of access.

Radiation therapy is another treatment option that is commonly used to treat brain tumours. Radiation damages the DNA of cancer cells and stops their division and growth.

Chemotherapy or anti-cancer drugs are not always used since the blood-brain barrier prevents the transport of many of these drugs into the brain from the bloodstream.

A number of experimental therapies are also in development.

Early treatment of tumours can prevent further complications. 15% of people with brain cancer will survive for 5 years or more after diagnosis. Despite this, there is still hope. Prognosis depends on a lot of factors. Knowing your risk and following up on suspicious symptoms can help in early diagnosis. Stay alert to stay healthy.

The Importance of Differentiating Between Love and Infatuation in Relationships

In one of the local dailies, there’s a popular segment where people usually seek advice on relationships or matters of the heart and is a must-read for many couples. I usually read it to get an insight into what really happens behind closed doors of many relationships and I must confess marriage as an institution is slowly crumbling before our eyes. Recently there was one lady who gave her age as 21 years whose story caught my attention bugging me into writing this article, she was lamenting about a situation that had befallen her and was seeking advice on what to do. She had fallen in love with a married man who was also her boss, and at first, she thought it was lust but as days passed it matured to love. Now the gist was that her love interest was transferred to another work station which meant more responsibilities for him and less time spent together but he always finds time for her whenever around. The prolonged absence as a result of his busy schedule was affecting her work performance and other socio-related activities as he had promised within a year to settle with her. Now she was confused about the relationship and started having doubts about whether it was tenable.

The first thing that popped up in my head after reading it was:-

· Is it possible she was confusing Love with infatuation?

· Blurring her reasoning and making her oblivious of the fact that such relationships will never see the finish line.

First, what is infatuation? Oxford Dictionary describes it as very strong feelings or attractions for somebody or something especially when these are unreasonable and do not last long, while Love has many definitions, the best one for this situation is a strong feeling of affection for somebody that you are sexually attracted to.

Hence from the above definitions is it likely that the lady is infatuated with the guy? Or it’s just pure Love in the making, and probably she just wants to have a family with him. Those advocating for Love, please review the above situation, and compare it with your version of what is Love or my above definition. Does she really meet the threshold to call that Love after your careful review, personally my compass is pointing at infatuation but maybe I’m influenced to view it in a narrow perspective due to preconceived notions developed by the society in such situations?

As a realist, I’m forced to say she’s suffering from infatuation and defending my position with the following reasons and facts. First, she’s starting to have doubts and is feeling confused with the whole arrangement showing her indecision about the relationship. Secondly, the strong feelings she has for him coupled by his absence and busy schedule are rendering her unproductive at work despite the guy making time whenever he’s free. Thirdly, outrageously expecting the guy to leave his family and genuinely start a new one with her within a year. Fourthly, she’s becoming unreasonable by demanding to spend more time with the guy knowing he’s married and his busy schedule.

In fairness, the lady is still young and maybe lacks the experience in discerning true love and infatuation. Due to her strong feelings for him, she’s blurred in seeing the obvious tell-tale signs of a doomed relationship and clings on a flickered hope soon to be extinguished by reality. It might be a harsh lesson for her in the end but she will gain invaluable life experience in preparing for the tough road ahead.

Most of us have been snared by infatuation at some point in our life making us believe that we’re truly in love but due to the strong feelings, our reasoning is blurred and we often ignore the cold hard truths about such relationships. We choose to view such relationships in a single perspective that fits our dimension and shuts out anyone deviating from our thinking making us develop unreasonable demands from the other person with the hope of sustaining such relationships.

Infatuation is like a fad as time passes by doubts start creeping in, our reasoning starts to become clearer and the strong attraction wears off gradually as reality sinks in, and automatically we’re inclined to move on to the next best thing.

Even though it’s difficult at first in differentiating Love from infatuation, we should try as much as possible in being level headed and view any relationships with a different perspective to see its viability. Take time and see if those strong emotions or attractions can develop into Love, check the circumstances that led to it, lastly ask yourself if it’s making you be unreasonable.

In the end, you’ll know if it’s true Love or Infatuation.
